The Craft of the Goodyear Hand Welt
While modern sneakers and glued dress shoes are destined for landfills, a Harrison Bull Goodyear welted shoe is constructed to be resoled indefinitely. Explore the centuries-old methodology of our workshop.
The Anatomy of a Goodyear Hand Welt
Why Harrison Bull shoes outlive standard footwear. Explore the 6 internal layers engineered to withstand decades of resoling.
Full Grain French Box Calf Upper
Layer 1 • Outer Envelope
Sourced exclusively from Tanneries du Puy & Annonay in France. Hand-stretched and blocked over the solid wooden last for a fortnight to achieve an enduring, crease-resistant anatomical drape.
The Six Vital Milestones of Production
Over eight weeks of hand labor culminates in an anatomical masterpiece.
Clicking & Hand Skiving
Master clickers examine each French box calf hide under raking natural light to identify grain flaws. Pattern pieces are cut by hand with surgical precision along the tension lines of the hide.
Fourteen-Day Wood Lasting
The upper and veg-tan lining are hand-pulled over the hornbeam wooden last using lasting pincers. The leather remains clamped to the last for a full 14 days to permanently neutralize elasticity.
Gemming Rib & Insole Lockstitch
A heavy 5mm vegetable-tanned insole is shaped with a channeled canvas gemming rib. The Goodyear welt lockstitch joins the welt strip, upper, and rib together without entering the inner shoe.
Portuguese Cork Compound & Steel Shank
The cavity beneath the insole is filled with hot granulated bark cork and flexible resin. A dual-tempered contoured steel shank is bedded across the waist to guarantee spinal arch rigidity.
Closed Channel Outsole Stitching
A 1mm razor flap is sliced into the perimeter of the oak-bark sole. A heavy lockstitch machine drives 10-12 stitches per inch to the welt, after which the flap is glued back over to seal the thread from weather.
Iron Burnishing & Mirror Glaze
The leather heel stacks and sole edges are shaped with bespoke iron wheels heated over flame. The shoe is burnished with natural beeswax and finished with a mirror spit-shine at the toe cap.
World-Renowned Tannery Partnerships
Harrison Bull selects from only three certified heritage tanneries across Europe and the Americas.
Tanneries du Puy & Annonay (France)
Famous for their alpine French box calf, providing the ultimate dense fiber structure that holds a glass-like mirror polish.
Horween Leather Co. (Chicago, USA)
Makers of Genuine Shell Cordovan. Tanned for six months in vegetable liquors to produce an uncreasable, lustrous equestrian leather.
Harboro Rubber Dainite (England)
Makers of genuine British studded all-weather Dainite rubber soles since 1894, keeping British gentlemen sure-footed on wet cobblestone.
