A Goodyear welt is the gold standard of bespoke shoemaking. A sturdy strip of leather (the welt) is sewn directly to the upper and insole rib, after which the outsole is stitched to the welt rather than directly to the upper. This allows a shoe to be completely resoled repeatedly for decades without compromising the upper structure, while creating a water-resistant cavity filled with granulated cork that molds to your unique foot shape over time.
